The petitioner seems to be an under trial prisoner raking up issue regarding absence of any time line for verification of the phone numbers of the relatives provided by the jail inmates, before they are allowed to talk to them on the coin box facility. 1/2

On 13.02.2024, we had expressly observed that to the extent of the petitioner the purpose of filing the petition had served since he was provided the facility of making phone calls to his relatives after due verification of the phone numbers.

However, considering the larger issue involved, and noticing that no specific time limit is prescribed anywhere for undertaking the verification of the phone numbers provided by the prisoners, we had issued certain directions. Pursuant to which, an affidavit has been filed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on behalf of Director General of Police, Maharashtra State, annexed thereto is a circular issued by the learned Special DIJ, Law and Order dated 11.03.2024 thereby directing all concerned to complete the exercise of verification of the phone numbers within 15 days. 5.
Needless to state that all the concerned to whom the circular is addressed would now bear in mind the seriousness and would punctually follow the time line. The writ petition is disposed of. 6.
Learned advocate Ms. Akshara S. Madake was appointed to represent the petitioner and we quantify her fees at Rs.2000/- (Rs. Two Thousand only) to be paid through the High Court Legal Aid Services Authority.
