By this Public Interest Litigation filed in 2013, the petitioner brought to notice of this Court certain serious aspects relating to damage to the environment because of illegal mining of sand from the Godavari river. Petitioner approached this Court with prayer to issue directions to the Government to take effective measures to protect the illegal mining.

Today, alongwith pursis dated 27-02-2020, Government Resolution dated 03-09-2019 is placed on record by which certain steps are taken by the State Government to regulate the mining of sand. This Government Resolution refers to the Sustainable Sand Mining Guidelines, 2016 and Sand Mining Framework, 2018 issued by the Central Government.

We appreciate the steps taken by the petitioner for protecting the environment. However, as the issue is seriously taken by the Central Government and the State Government and guidelines are being framed/ issued to meet the exigencies, in our view, no purpose would be served by keeping this Public Interest Litigation pending.
