DATED: 18.03.2021 CORAM :

2. The Registrar General, High Court of Madras, Chennai - 600 104. ... Respondents Prayer:- Petition filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India praying for issue a Writ of Mandamus directing the Respondents not to demand electricity consumption charges for the non-usage period i.e., from 22.03.2020 to 28.02.2021 and waive the electricity charges for the said period for the Law Chambers in the High Court Premises, Chennai. For Petitioner : Mr.N.S.Sivakumar For Respondents : Mr.B.Vijay for R-2

ORDER

(Order of the Court was made by The Hon'ble Chief Justice) This is a matter which scarcely deserves any attention.

2. The petitioner as the Co-Chairman of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu seeks a direction on the electricity authorities to not raise any bills for the period between March 22, 2020 and February 28, 2021 in respect of the law chambers at the High Court premises, since such chambers were closed. https://hcservices.ecourts.gov.in/hcservices/

3. For a start, lawyers are more privileged than other sections of the society and should be able to bear the nominal burden during the period of lockdown. Secondly, no such omnibus direction can be issued and, if in certain cases, the bills appear to be more than what they ought to be, individual complaints may be made. Further, the petitioner cannot be permitted to espouse the cause of lawyers who are well able to protect their rights and interests individually.

4. This attempt at popularity by the petitioner was eminently avoidable.

5. W.P.No.7100 of 2021 is dismissed. The petitioner is spared the costs in view of his position. Consequently, W.M.P.No.7626 of 2021 is closed.
