Respondents Prayer : Petition filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India seeking issuance of a writ of mandamus directing the respondents not to settle the sum of Rs.36.9 crores of public money towards the Income Tax and Wealth Tax arrears of Late Chief Minister Dr. J. Jayalalithaa which has been deposited in the Account of the City Civil Court, Chenai on 25.7.2020 pursuant to the land acquisition award dated 22.07.2020.

ORDER

(Order of the court was made by the Hon'ble Chief Justice) The petitioner, appearing-in-person, is absent when the matter is called out.

2. Learned State Government Pleader, on instructions, submits that pursuant to the order of the learned Single Judge of this Court, the property was handed over to the nephew and niece of Dr.J.Jayalalithaa on 10.12.2021 and the deposited compensation amount along with accrued interest i.e. Rs.70,40,87,713/- was returned to the account of the Land Acquisition Officer/Revenue Divisional Officer, South Chennai on 14.3.2022.

3. In the light of that, the purpose of the writ petition now does not survive. The writ petition is disposed of. There shall be no order as to costs. Consequently, W.M.P.No.14837 of 2020 is closed.
