O R D E R

(Order of the Court was made by The Hon'ble Chief Justice) The petitioner seeks to lay a challenge to the Tamil Nadu Universities Law (Amendment) Ordinance-2012 published in the Government Gazette dated 14.07.2012 seeking to raise the age of the Vice Chancellor for retirement from 65 to 70 on par with the position under the Central Universities Act, 2009.

2.The plea sought to be advanced as per the grounds is that by raising the retirement age, one cannot achieve academic excellence. https://hcservices.ecourts.gov.in/hcservices/

3.We feel the challenge is completely without merit. It is for the Government to lay down the retirement age. We may add that the absence of well-equipped teachers and professors, as also consequently Vice-Chancellors cannot really be doubted. It is thus, with longevity increasing along with ability to carry on work, one cannot say that the decision to increase the age suffers from any illegality or arbitrariness especially when it is sought to be equated with the position of Central Universities Act. 4.Writ Petition is dismissed. No costs.
