ORDER
(Order of the Court was made by the Hon'ble Chief Justice) Challenge to the merger of the Suramangalam Railway Colony Sub Post Office with the Suramangalam Head Post Office is mainly premised on the ground that the customers, who are presently availing the services from the Sub Post Office, may be required to travel a longer distance.
2. It is submitted that large number of persons are availing
the services such as withdrawal of pension amount, postal insurance, money transfers, saving accounts, etc., from the Sub Post Office and the proposed merger will cause undue hardship to the residents of the locality.
3. A bare perusal of the communication dated 30.9.2025 makes it clear that the distance of the Head Post Office is not so much that the writ court itself should interfere with the decision of merger of the Sub Post Office with the Head Post Office, more so when various facilities which have been indicated in the letter can be availed through online platform.
4. At this juncture, learned Deputy Solicitor General appearing on behalf of the respondents, on instruction, informs that there is door step pension delivery service available to pensioners, besides availability of various online facilities, including mobile banking and internet banking, to all customers.
5. For the foregoing reasons, we are not inclined to interfere with the decision taken by the fourth respondent to merge the Sub
Post Office with the Head Post Office.
However, before parting, we would direct the Postmaster of the Head Post Office at Suramangalam to chalk out a scheme at the local level to conduct awareness programmes at the Head Post Office for the next two months and also send email and Whatsapp messages to all customers, more particularly to the pensioners, informing them of the various online services available, besides the door step delivery service, and the way in which they can be best utilized, so that the customers need not remain physically present in the Post Office to avail the services.
