PRAYER: Petition filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, to issue a Writ of Mandamus directing the respondents to allow the women convicts at the Special Prison for Women in Trichy to Work in the Freedom Fuel Filling Station which is situated at the very same prison campus in Trichy in accordance with law and within the time stipulated by this Court. This Public Interest Litigation is filed seeking for a mandamus with the respondents to provide women convicts at Special Prison for Women in Trichy to work in the Freedom Fuel Filling Station situated near the prison campus.
2. By consent of both parties, this writ petition is taken up for final disposal at the stage of admission itself.
3. Heard the learned counsel on either side. 2/4
4. The learned Additional Public Prosecutor takes notice for the respondents and reports that the Superintendent of Prison, Trichy, has informed that out of 33 women convicts in Trichy Special Prison, four have expressed their willingness to serve in the Opener Fuel Filling Station and their applications have been considered. Out of four women convicts, one convict is yet to complete her minimum requirement of three years imprisonment. Insofar as other three women convicts, who have given their willingness, their applications are under process and after obtaining permission of the Director General of Police, necessary orders will be passed.
5. Recording the said submission, this writ petition is disposed of. No costs.
