Respondents PRAYER:

Writ Petition is filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India praying for issuance of a Writ of Mandamus, directing the respondents to prohibit caste names which are in using to name streets and places in Tamil Nadu based on G.O.No.1531/1978, dated 03.10.1978.

[Order of the Court was made by S.NAGAMUTHU, J.] https://hcservices.ecourts.gov.in/hcservices/ The petitioner has come up with this Public Interest Litigation seeking a direction to the respondents to implement

G.O.No.1531/1978, dated 03.10.1978, wherein the Government has directed that the caste name should not be reflected in the names of any street, Town or any area within the limits of any Municipality or Panchayat.

2.According to the petitioner, in the electoral roll issued by the Election Commission, many streets have been mentioned in the name of the caste.

3.The learned Special Government Pleader, on instructions, would submit that so far as the State Government is concerned, the caste names have already been removed to the streets and roads. The said statement is recorded.

4.In our considered view, if the Election Commission has issued the electoral roll with caste names for the streets, the remedy for the petitioner is to approach the Election Commission. So far as the State Government is concerned, the petitioner is not able to point out any specific case whether the caste name is used for any streets or roads. In the absence of the same, we are unable to grant the relief. This Writ Petition is, therefore, dismissed. No costs.
