Respondents PRAYER: Writ Petition filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, to issue a Writ of Mandamus directing the respondents to expedite and complete the process of identifying the suitable land for the construction of the new prison complex for Madurai Central Prison which has jurisdiction over six Southern Districts of Tamil Nadu in accordance with law within the time stipulated by this Court.

[Order of the Court was made by R.SUBRAMANIAN, J.] Prayer in the Writ Petition reads as follows:- ''To issue a Writ of Mandamus directing the respondents to expedite and complete the process of identifying the suitable land for the construction of the new prison complex for Madurai Central Prison which has jurisdiction over six Southern Districts of Tamil Nadu in accordance with law within the time stipulated by this Court.''
2. We heard Mr.R.Alagumani, learned counsel appearing for the petitioner; Mr.P.Thilakkumar, learned Government Pleader appearing for the respondents 1 to 5; and Mr.B.Thanga Aravindh, learned Government Advocate (Criminal side) appearing for the respondents 6 and 7.
3. Mr.P.Thilakkumar, learned Government Pleader has placed a letter dated 05.08.2024, addressed by the Commissioner of Land Administration to the Principal Secretary to Government, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, seeking to remove an extent of 36.05.5 Hectares in Survey No.
609/11A of Therkutheru Village, Melur Taluk, Madurai District, from the Prohibitory Order Book [POB] so as to enable him to transfer the same to the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services for establishment of a new Central Prison, Special Prison for Women and Staff Quarters. The learned Government Pleader would also assure this Court that the needful will be done at the earliest.
4. Recording the submission of the learned Government Pleader, this Writ Petition is disposed of. No costs. Consequently, connected Miscellaneous Petition is closed. If the project does not take off within three months, the petitioner will be entitled to seek reopening of the Writ Petition.
