ORDER

The petitioner seeks a mandamus to the respondent to renew her passport by deleting the name of Madhavan shown as her spouse and to substitute the same by showing she is the daughter of Ramakrishnan.

2. It is the case of the petitioner that she is unmarried and doing garment business. She had obtained passport in the year 1993 which is being renewed periodically. When she had renewed the passport in the year 2015 she was in a relationship with one Madhavan but they had not got married. However, her surname was mentioned as Madhavan in the passport which is valid for the period between 11.08.2015 and 10.08.2025. However, her other public documents would show her father as her guardian and the name of Madhavan is not reflected in any of these documents. Since her passport was due for renewal, she had made an online application on 21.07.2025. Thereafter, she was directed to appear before the 1st respondent on 30.07.2025. She had appeared for the enquiry and had informed the officials to delete the name of Madhavan from her passport. However, they were not agreeable for the same. Therefore, the petitioner is before this Court.

3. Heard the learned counsel on either side.

4. The petitioner has sworn to an affidavit that she has not married the said Madhavan and was only in a relationship. Therefore, Madhavan cannot be considered as her husband and that apart, the relationship between the two has come to an end. Her earlier passport does not contain the name of Madhavan but only contains the name of her father Ramakrishnan. There is no impediment for the respondents to correct the passport entry by deleting the name of Madhavan from the petitioner's passport.

5. Therefore, the writ petition is allowed and the respondents are directed to correct the passport as requested and issue the same to the petitioner within a period of three (3) weeks form the date of receipt of a copy of this order. No costs.
