The present petition has been filed under Articles 226/227 of the Constitution of India for issuance of a writ in the nature of mandamus directing the official respondents to protect the life and liberty of the petitioners from private respondents.

Learned counsel for the petitioners contends that petitioners are living in a live in relationship. It is contended that family members of petitioner No.1 wants to marry her with the boy of their choice and when she disclosed about her relationship with petitioner No.2 to them, they gave severe beatings to her. Thereafter, she left her parental house and started living with petitioner No.2. It is further contended that private respondents are threatening the petitioners with dire consequences and to implicate petitioner No.2 in a false criminal case. In this regard, they have also submitted a representation dated 07.03.2024 (Annexure P-3) to respondent No.2 but no action has been taken so far.

Mr. Subhash Godara, Addl. A.G., Punjab, who is present in Court, accepts notice for the official respondents. Counsel for the petitioners is directed to supply a copy of complete paper book to the counsel appearing for the State during the course of the day.

Without commenting on the validity of relationship of the petitioners and entering upon an exercise to evaluate the evidentiary value of the documents placed on the file, I dispose of this petition with direction to respondent No.2 to decide the representation of the petitioners (Annexure P-3) within a period of one week from the date of receipt of a certified copy of this order and grant them protection, if there is any threat to their life and liberty. It is made clear that this order shall not be taken to protect the petitioners from legal action for violation of law, if any committed by them.
