This is a petition under Articles 226/227 of the Constitution of India for issuance of a direction to respondent Nos.2 and 3 to protect the life and liberty of the petitioners. It is contended by the learned counsel for the petitioners that both the petitioners are major, aged 25 years and 28 years, respectively. The proof of age has been annexed along with the petition. The petitioners, who have known each other for the last more than two years, wanted to get married. However, their relationship was not acceptable to their parents. Therefore, against the wishes of their parents, the petitioners have solmenized their marriage on 20.07.2020 according to Sikh rites and rituals in Gurudwara Dashmesh Pita Paatshi Daswi (Reg.) Village Singhadevi, Tehsil Kharar, District Mohali. The petitioners had given a representation dated 20.07.2020 (Annexure P-5) to respondent No.2 for protection of their lives and liberty. However, no action has been taken till date.

Heard learned counsel for the parties.

Without expressing any opinion with regard to the veracity of the contents of the petition and the submissions made by learned counsel for the petitioners, the present petition is disposed of with a direction to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Sangrur, District Sangrur (Punjab), to consider the representation dated 20.07.2020 (Annexure P-5) and take necessary action as per law. It is, however, made clear that this order shall not, in any manner, be construed as an expression of the opinion on the veracity of the statement made by the petitioners or on the validity of the marriage and shall have no effect on any other civil or criminal proceedings, if any, instituted/pending against them.
