The petitioner through instant petition under Article 226 of Constitution of India is seeking setting aside of order dated 05.10.2023 (Annexure P-10) whereby request for addition of his surname 'Basra' has been declined.

Learned counsel for the petitioner submits that surname of the petitioner is 'Basra'. All the family members of the petitioner are using the said surname. In all the documents of the petitioner surname 'Basra' has been used. The petitioner has already retired and to avoid any future litigation surname 'Basra' may be added in his official record. 3.

Learned State counsel could not point out any valid reason for denying prayer of the petitioner except citing Rule 14.40 of the Punjab Police Rules, 1934.
