The petitioner is pursuing her Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) course, Mathematics (Honours) at Muralidhar Girls' College, a college under University of Calcutta. In the 6th Semester of the said course held in the year 2022, she could not clear the Point Set Topology paper, to clear it, she took a supplementary examination held in the year 2024 but was unsuccessful in the theoretical part of the said exam. There was a shortfall of six marks to reach the pass marks. The petitioner is alleging that she has re-verified her answer script of the said paper through an independent expert, who has opined that the petitioner is entitled to six more marks on the said subject.
The petitioner is praying that the said six marks be awarded to her.
Mr. Chatterjee, learned advocate for the University of Calcutta submits that the assessment of an answer-script by a private expert is not encourageable, however, considering the fact that the petitioner has cleared almost all papers of the course, an expert of any other University on the subject may be appointed to re-assess the said answer-script. In the backdrop of the fact that the petitioner has cleared almost all papers of the course, particularly in view of the fair stand taken by Mr. Chatterjee, this Court requests the Controller of Examination, Jadavpur University to appoint any expert on the said subject of the said University for reverification/re-assessment of the answer script of the petitioner on the Point Set Topology (theoretical) paper.
The said expert shall assess the said answer script and shall form his independent opinion without being influenced by the earlier assessment of the examiner of the University of Calcutta.
The said expert, after such assessment shall forward his report to the Controller of Examination, University of Calcutta, enabling him to take appropriate decision regarding the result of the petitioner.
To facilitate the entire drill, the Controllers of Examination of both Universities shall exchange their official email addresses. It is expected that the entire exercise in this regard would be completed expeditiously, preferably within a period of six weeks from date.
WPA 11550 of 2025 is disposed of with the above terms without any order as to costs.
