The petitioner says that he is in custody for 1 year 2 months. Witness action has not yet begun. It is anybody's guess as to when the trial shall conclude. He prays for bail. Learned advocate for the State says that July 15, 2024, has been fixed as the date for commencement of witness action. She tells us that there are 15 witnesses named in the chargesheet.

In view of the commercial quantity of contraband being involved, we are not inclined to grant bail to the petitioner immediately.

CRM (NDPS) 989 of 2024 is dismissed.

However, since he is in custody for quite some time, we direct the learned trial Court to expedite the trial to the fullest and conclude the same within 1 year from the next date fixed Signed By :

before it without granting any unnecessary adjournment to either of the parties.

We clarify that in the event, the trial is not concluded within the time period indicated above, the petitioner will be at liberty to renew his prayer for bail.
