The petitioner prays for compassionate appointment. It appears from the documents annexed to the writ petition that the Joint Secretary, Panchayats & Rural Development Department by a communication dated 23rd February, 2022 addressed to the District Magistrate, Purba Medinipur requested for issuance of appointment letter in favour of the petitioner after observing due formalities, namely, police verification and medical examination. The learned Advocate for the petitioner submits that the police verification process is over but the medical examination is yet to be conducted. Learned Advocate representing the State respondents submits that the police verification is still in progress. The respondent authorities ought to appreciate that the petitioner is praying for compassionate appointment. Such appointments are provided on urgent and emergency basis to the eligible members of the deceased employee to

tide over the immediate financial crisis faced on the death of the bread-earner. The same ought not to be kept pending for an indefinite period of time. The respondent authorities have already recommended the name of the petitioner for appointment and the direction was issued by the department to the District Magistrate to issue appointment letter. Steps ought to have been taken on prompt basis to ensure that the petitioner is issued the letter of appointment. In view of the above, the instant writ petition is disposed of directing the District Magistrate, Purba Medinipur to ensure that the appointment letter is issued in favour of the petitioner at the earliest after completion of the police verification and the medical examination. The District Magistrate, Purba Medinipur shall ensure that the appointment letter is issued positively within a period of three months from the date of communication of this order. The writ petition stands disposed of.
