This is an application alleging police inaction in connection with a case of extortion, which led to the death of the petitioner's father.

Report dated 11.12.2023 filed by the ADG & IGP (Cyber Cell), West Bengal, is taken on record.

Learned counsel appearing on behalf of the petitioner submits as follows. It is an unfortunate case where after falling prey to an obscene video link sent to the petitioner's father, the accused extorted money to the tune of Rs.15 lakhs. Soon thereafter, the petitioner's father was compelled to commit suicide. FIR was lodged on 01.08.2022. Till date, investigation has not been completed. More importantly, there is no clue about the money trail.

Learned senior government advocate representing the State relies on the report and submits as follows. On 25.09.2023, this Court directed further investigation to be carried out under the supervision of ADG, Cyber, CID, West Bengal. The same is being done. There has been a significant progress in the investigation. Some other accused were arrested from the district of Murshidabad. Pen drives and mobile phones were sent to the laboratories for expert opinion. The accused were interrogated. An SIT was sent to Rajasthan and a prime accused was arrested from there. He confessed about his involvement. Another team was sent to Uttar Pradesh to ascertain bank account transactions. Teams are again being sent to different States to ascertain facts.

It appears that a prime accused has been arrested and the police are trying to get hold of the money trail.

There appears to be a significant development in the investigation of the case.

The investigation shall continue under the supervision of ADG & IGP (Cyber Cell), West Bengal.

Let the same be concluded expeditiously and in accordance with law. 9.

With these observations, the writ petition is disposed of. 10.

Urgent photostat certified copy of this order may be supplied to the parties expeditiously, if applied for.
