Mr. Kamalesh Bhattacharyya Mr. Kallol Kumar Maity ...... for the petitioners Mr. Samrat Sen Mr. Nilotpal Chatterjee Mr. Amitava Mitra .....for the State The only relief prayed for by the petitioners is that the District Magistrate, Purba Medinipur, should complete the procedure for selection of Notaries for the Purba Medinipur District. Both the petitioners appeared in the selection test in 2020 and were recommended by the concerned authority in 2020 itself. The petitioners complain that no decision was taken by the authorities thereafter.

Learned AAAG appearing for the State submits that the issue involves a policy decision and the State may finally decide not to fill up the vacancies for the possession.

Whatever may be the policy decision referred to, there is no reason why the respondent No. 1 would keep the entire process pending for more than two years. The Principal Secretary, Department of Law, Government of West Bengal is hence directed to take expeditious steps in

completing the procedure for selection of Notaries in Purba Medinipur within six weeks from date. Needless to say, the applicants will be informed of the decision taken by the State authorities without any further delay. WPA 24029 of 2022 is disposed of in terms in the above.

It is made clear that this Court has not gone into the merits of the matter.
